Mobility, eGovernment, Energy By Verena Brune on March 21, 2010

Barcelona has installed a wireless system to manage city infrastructure. The system utilizes LED lights with a video sesor to detect presence of people on the streets. The city can thus control the amount of light needed and has reduced its power consumption by 30%. The idea is to manage the city in a sustainable way, good job Barcelona!

Students working on ICT applications for WCIT 2010

Creative Industries By WCIT Admin on March 19, 2010

Minor-students of INHolland University of Applied Sciences are working hard on their project for WCIT 2010. In ten weeks time 'Mobile Applications' students design, build and program websites and mobile applications for the international delegates of WCIT 2010.

Moodboard
"Before we’ve build the design we’ve created a mood board for the websites," student Bas ten Broeke says. "You can clearly see our picture we have in mind about an ideal WCIT event. We would like to connect Amsterdam to the rest of the world and mark it as a cosmopolitan city during the WCIT." Bas is working with fellow student Olaf Aben on the design of mobile and 'normal' website. "We have almost finished the draft and we are now creating a style manual for both sites. This is e.g. about font sizes, pixels, bar sizes and colors use. It will make the sites easier to build."

Basic website
Huib Leusink and Jeroen van Warmerdam are busy building a basic website for both mobile phone and laptop. "We first had to learn a whole new system, with a completely different programming then we were used to use," explains Huib. “We had to figure out how it all works before we could start building."

Helpdesk
During the WCIT event in May the students will be present as well. Huib: "We can be found at the help desks. Our job will be constituted of helping the delegates to install software on their phone and be a contact person to answer related questions.”

Tim Berners-Lee with an update on open data

"If people put data on the Web - government data, scientific data, community data - whatever it is, it will be used by other people to do wonderful things in ways they never could have imagined."
Tim Berners-Lee, TED, February 2010

Tim Berners-Lee, credited with inventing the World Wide Web, comes back to TED for open, structured data with a quick update. Spoiler alert: things are looking good - and they're only going to get a lot better. But you already knew that, right?
